Ok so let me start off by saying I’m a total jersey nerd. I have to believe that one of the big reasons I got into hockey as a little two year old lad was the awesome, bright, crazy unis of the 1990’s. That love has followed me into adulthood, and I have built up a mighty fine collection over the years of some beautiful jerseys (and some pretty ugly ones too). Speaking of ugly, here’s the BLT take on the worst jerseys ever worn by NHL teams.

One of my biggest gripes with the current state of the game today is how many teams have absolutely shocking uniform designs and decisions. I would assume these franchises are paying for top-quality business consultation and design people, yet we continue to see insane decisions like the Flames and Capitals just made recently when Adidas took over, to ditch the beautiful retro looks they had, and go with plain, pipe-y, pyjama-looking trash, while 99.9% our jaws dropped at how such a decision could be made. Is there some ugly-jersey conspiracy that we’re all totally oblivious to?

But alas, we don’t have any say in which jerseys our teams will don. But it won’t stop us from dreaming! So I decided to do a series on the best jerseys that each franchise has worn. You may agree with some, you may think I’m crazy. Either way, let me know by tweeting me at @BLTJay!

So let’s kick it off with one of my favourite sets to ever be worn under the bright lights of the NHL: The Anaheim Ducks.

White and Eggplant Jersey (1993-2006)

How many professional teams in sports history can say they have rocked teal and eggplant together? I would have to say it’s not many more than one. I’ve always loved how different this look is, and I have to give props to the cool template with the diagonal striping on the bottom, even if it is apparently for no rhyme or reason.

Being born in 1992, growing up with the Mighty Ducks Disney movies there aren’t many scenes that got 4 year old Jay more fired up than this one. I’m pretty sure I wore the VHS to shreds watching it every day.

Also, ironically, this jersey is at the core of one of my favourite NHL moments of all time. Who could forget my boy Paul Kariya getting knocked unconscious and then returning a couple minutes later to rocket one top shelf and force a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals??? OFF THE FLOOR, ON THE BOARD!!!!

So yeah, these babies are weird. One of the most unique jerseys in NHL history. But I love them, and there’s nothing you can say to take that away from me. Plus, the new Ducks jerseys are brutal.

So what do you think? Yay or nay? What Ducks uni is your favourite?

Summer got ya down with the lack of hockey? Fret not friends… check out the hockey talk from beer leaguers’ point of view.
