Another week, another BLT Rocket! These girls love hockey just as much as all of us do, they’re just better than us on the ice (probably) and better looking off the ice (definitely).

Today we are featuring Samantha Hiller (@theoriginalsammy), a ref from Chicago that could give us a penalty any day of the week with no complaints.

She is originally from Boulder, Colorado, so naturally she is an Avalanche fan, and she was actually an ice girl for them back in the day!

She says she has loved hockey since she was a toddler. “My mom is a huge hockey fan and we used to spend our nights watching games. My first time on the ice (age 7), I fell in love with the game and from then on, I spent all of my free time at the rink.”

Sam retired from playing when she went to college because officiating is really what she is passionate about. She is currently in paramedic school and aspires to be a paramedic or firefighter when she graduates.

“I still referee men’s league occasionally and I enjoy the laughs I get from my beer leaguers! I travel a lot for officiating and I get to be a part of so many games and moments. I wouldn’t trade this lifestyle for the world.”

When Sam isn’t on the ice you can find her hanging out with her family, margarita in hand. She also loves playing guitar and singing, and though you’d never guess by looking at her, she’s a big fan of metal music!

So sign us up for a margarita with Sammy the next time we’re in Chicago! Which should be at the next Chicago Draft Tournament if I’m not mistaken!
