Ok so let me start off by saying I’m a total jersey nerd. I have to believe that one of the big reasons I got into hockey as a little two year old lad was the awesome, bright, crazy unis of the 1990’s. That love has followed me into adulthood, and I have built up a mighty fine collection over the years of some beautiful jerseys (and some pretty ugly ones too).
One of my biggest gripes with the current state of the game today is how many teams have absolutely shocking uniform designs and decisions. I would assume these franchises are paying for top-quality business consultation and design people, yet we continue to see insane decisions like the Flames and Capitals just made recently when Adidas took over, to ditch the beautiful retro looks they had, and go with plain, pipe-y, pyjama-looking trash, while 99.9% our jaws dropped at how such a decision could be made. Is there some ugly-jersey conspiracy that we’re all totally oblivious to?
But alas, we don’t have any say in which jerseys our teams will don. But it won’t stop us from dreaming! So I decided to do a series on the best jerseys that each franchise has worn. You may agree with some, you may think I’m crazy. Either way, let me know by tweeting me at @BLTJay!
White Classic Blue/Yellow (1983-1996)
Oh Buffalo Sabres…. The poster boys of unconditional love in the NHL. You know the rebellious teenager that keeps fucking up and making terrible decisions but you know deep down that they are a good kid, so you still love them? That’s the Buffalo Sabres when it comes to jerseys. A great base and one of the best colour schemes in the league, but there are so many “what the fuck were you thinking”‘s.
Let’s take a look at a few:
These guys really hold nothing back when trying something new. But the thing is, they don’t need to! The best look was the one that they had all along, wayyyy back in the 1970’s.
Look at these babies, damn they are sexy. A classic man’s look, no doubt. The Sabres have tried to come back to it a few times unsuccessfully, with numbers on the breast, and piping, and bad, bad things. The only time they went back successfully was the 2008 Winter Classic. And I know I LITERALLY said last blog that shoulder yokes are never good, but I guess I take it back. It is good very, very rarely. The white Sabres classic is one of those exceptions.
The Sabres actually have a good history with Winter Classic jerseys as they also had a stunner look in 2017 against the Rangers. The double stripes kind of lost me at first, but the colours are just so fucking nice (royal blue >>> navy blue) that it might be enough to beat the leader here.
How about this: make me one of the 2008 jerseys with the 2017 colour scheme and you’ve got one of the nicest looks in the league. And please, just PLEASE stop trying to be new and different. For the love of god.
Summer got ya down with the lack of hockey? Fret not friends… check out episode 3 of Post and Out!
